Theatre Arts at Dearborn Elementary School
I am pleased and honored that Dearborn as been selected as a finalist for the ‘Bravo Award’. It has been my privilege to provide the Theatre component of the Arts Education Program at Dearborn for the past two years. During this time, I have delivered a standard based comprehensive theatre program to grades K-5. The teachers and I work as a team to make sure that the theatre curriculum is accessible to all students at Dearborn. We have worked with the Special Education students as well as the English Learners. Each year, I am able to lean more toward facilitation than actual instruction.
The Dearborn staff realizes that education has to extend beyond the classroom and textbooks. They realize that students learn best when the information is taken from the page to the stage. The arts are a process through which students can live the educational experience. The teachers at Dearborn strive to integrate the arts with all subject matter while keeping the integrity of the art form itself. The teachers understand that learning theatre skills and strategies will help their students with the cooperative spirit of learning and also enhance their students’ self-esteem.
After twelve years of teaching theatre, I realize what a gift it is for the students at Dearborn to have such dedicated teachers that provide a comprehensive and systemic arts program that intellectually and creatively challenge the students. I truly appreciate the enthusiasm and willingness the staff has in providing a meaningful curriculum that embraces and emphasizes the arts.
